Lewes turn to fan power for budget boost

STRUGGLING Ryman Premier club Lewes are hoping to bolster their playing budget with the help of supporters’ generosity.

The community club have set up the ’12th Man Scheme’ to allow fans to make a direct contribution from the terraces. If it’s a success, it could be a huge help for boss Darren Freeman with the Rooks currently bottom of the league.

Fellow Ryman Premier club Dulwich Hamlet successfully use a similar model and recently signed Rhys Murrell-Williamson thanks to money raised by supporters.

Funds raised by Lewes fans will be used by boss Freeman to pay for new players and will not be used for any other reason.

The loyal Lewes faithful can pay what they want via a one-off contribution or a weekly, monthly or annual standing order.

Manager Freeman said: “We appreciate all the work involved in this scheme. This will enable us to strengthen our squad, which is very important to us at this stage of the season.”

New Lewes director John Peel added: “I am delighted to get this scheme underway, which gives fans a recognisable identity on the pitch as well as off it. Whilst the initiative is long term, I very much hope that the scheme takes off and that we see the benefit this season.”
