GRESLEY have appointed experienced striker Gary Ricketts as their third manager of the season after sacking Scott Goodwin.

The former Long Buckby chief replaced Wayne Thornhill as Moatmen boss after an indifferent start to the Evo-Stik NPL Division One South season.

However, their form hasn’t improved and they won just one of Goodwin’s four league games in charge, also getting knocked out of the FA Trophy and Doodson League Cup.

Gresley sacked Goodwin on Saturday after their league game against Shaw Lane Aquaforce was postponed and quickly appointed Ricketts, who had been serving as assistant manager, as player-boss.

Ricketts, 40, has played for a host of Non-League sides including Hinckley, Hucknall, Nuneaton, Ilkeston, Salford and Mickleover Sports and will be assisted by player Jamie Barrett.

A club statement said: “Gresley FC first team manager Scott Goodwin has been relived of his duties with immediate effect. Gary Ricketts has been appointed as player-manager assisted by Jamie Barrett.

“The club would like to thank Scott for his efforts in the last few weeks and wish him every success in the future.”
