Buckwell, who only replaced Simon Colbran in mid-October, left the Chips on Saturday night after their 4-1 home loss to high-flying South Park.
The defeat left them second from bottom of the Ryman South and ultimately meant the end for Buckwell’s brief reign.
Tanner has prior managerial experience in the division having been in charge of the Terrors for almost two years, leaving the club at the end of last season.
His first game in charge of the Chips will be Saturday’s trip to Sittingbourne before another away game against Worthing next Tuesday.
