South Shields make statement with ambitious double deal

National League North club South Shields have boosted their attacking options by securing deals for former Rangers and Sunderland winger Jordan Jones and Radcliffe forward Rio Clegg.

Mike Williamson’s attacking arsenal was weakened last month when League Two club Grimsby Town secured a deal for Mariners forward Sonny Finch after triggering a six-figure release clause in the former Middlesbrough youngster’s contract.

However, the Mariners boss has moved to go some way to replacing Finch by completing two eye-catching deals over the last 48 hours.

South Shields completed an agreement with experienced winger Jones on Sunday, reuniting the former Rangers man with Williamson after he worked under him during his time at Carlisle United.

Connection

Speaking after putting pen-to-paper, the 19-times capped Northern Ireland international explained his connection with Williamson was one of the key factors in his decision to join the Step 2 club.

He told the club website: “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to represent the club and build on the great relationship I have with the manager.

“It’s an opportunity to fall back in love with football and do whatever it takes to bring success to South Shields.”

The deal quickly led to another, with the Mariners signing Radcliffe forward Rio Clegg after agreeing an undisclosed fee with their National League North rivals.

The 24-year-old plundered his way to 26 goals in 44 league appearances for The Boro last season and he will now hope to find the net with regularity after officially joining South Shields on Monday.

Buzzing

Speaking to the club website, he wished his former employers well for the future and immediately set his sights on making an impact at Mariners Park.

He said: “I’m buzzing to be here and to be signing for South Shields.

“It’s my first time stepping into a full-time environment, and I think this is the perfect club for me to continue my career.

“I love the football that’s being played here, it suits me really well, and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’d like to say thank you to everyone at Radcliffe, the staff, players, and everyone involved who have helped me during my time at the club, and I wish you all the best for the rest of the season.”

Jones and Clegg could make their South Shields debut in Tuesday night’s home game with National League North rivals Marine.
